I am seeking reelection to the Board of Trustees to ensure that our students receive an excellent education with small class sizes, high quality teachers, a safe learning environment, access to 21st century technology, innovative and academically rigorous curriculum, and strong parent engagement. I support responsible fiscal policy and will use my long experience building community partnerships to bring more resources into our Evergreen schools.
Currently, I’m the Board President. I’m also the Executive Director of the Santa Clara County School Boards Association, working with all of the 31 school district boards in our county in addition to MetroEd and the County Board of Education. At the state level, I’m also a member of the California School Boards Association’s Delegate Assembly, which works on California educational issues and legislation.
Since moving to Evergreen in 1997, I’ve been serving our community on numerous bond oversight committees, school site councils, PTAs, and the Evergreen School Board in addition to being a past president of the District 8 Community Round Table. I’ve also been the District 8 representative to the San Jose Redistricting Commission, a Housing and Community Development commissioner, and a member of the General Plan Task Force Update committee working on land use issues in San Jose. In all these roles, I have been a strong leader for the community in addition to an effective coalition builder. I am forward thinking, and I am an excellent listener.
During my tenure on the Board, our district has accomplished many things, including modernizing our facilities through our bond program, passing a parcel tax, rolling out the new Common Core curriculum and testing in English Language Arts/Math, introducing a full day Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten program and launching the new Lobo School of Innovation at Quimby Oak middle school. We have also added new mental health counselors and programs, and have improved our outreach and communication to the community.
But we still have more to do. Our district is currently undergoing demographic decline, and we need to do more to attract and retain our students and high quality teachers. We need to create new and innovative academic programs to respond to the needs of our students, including magnet programs. We need to create fiscal sustainability for our district, bringing new resources into our district. I have the experience and leadership skills to move our district forward through these difficult times.
In terms of my personal background, my husband and I have lived in Evergreen since 1997; our two children attended Evergreen schools. I have Ph.D and Masters in Political Science from UC Berkeley, and a dual Bachelor’s degree in English and Political Science from UCLA.
I respectfully request your vote in November. Together, we can ensure that every student in the Evergreen School District gets the high quality education that they deserve. Thank you.
